§ Mrs. Virginia BottomleyTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will identify the benefits to(a) single men and (b) married men with two children as a result of changes in taxation since 1979.
§ Mr. Norman LamontA single person on average male earnings pays £16.01 a week less in income tax than he would have had the 1978–79 income tax regime been kept in place and simply indexed for inflation. On the same basis, a married man on average male earnings pays £15.62 less. Child tax allowances are not included in the indexed 1978–79 income tax regime as they were being phased out.
