§ Mr. Teddy TaylorTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the additional costs stemming from the green pound changes agreed at the recent meeting of the Council; and to what extent these will be borne by the European Economic Community member states and consumers, respectively.
§ Mr. MacGregor[holding answer 30 June 1988]: Changes to the green pound decided at the Council on 23–34 June will add 31 mecu to the Community budget in 1989, and increase United Kingdom public expenditure by about £5 million in 1988–89 and by about £50 million a year thereafter. The effect on consumers, which will be from the package as a whole, will be an increase in the retail prices index of about 0.04 per cent., once all the effects have worked through.
