HC Deb 26 January 1988 vol 126 cc156-7W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on his policy towards central America, in the light of the recent meeting of Presidents of the five central American countries.

Mr. Eggar

We note that at their summit on 15–16 January, the Presidents of central America declared that they were not entirely satisfied with the implementation thus far of the Esquipulas II undertakings, and that they agreed to fulfil these unconditionally and unilaterally. We have consistently supported efforts to restore peace and promote democracy in the region and appeal to all the central American countries, and especially Nicaragua, to comply with their obligations under the agreement, especially those relating to democratisation.
