§ Mr. McLeishTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the total number of claimants in England, Scotland, Wales and the Fife, Central constituency who have been refused benefit through the decision of an independent adjudication officer; if he will break this figure down according to the reasons given for the withdrawal of benefit; and if he will provide the information requested for each year from 1979 to 1987, inclusive.
§ Mr. Portillo[holding answer 1 December 1987]: For unemployment benefit, which I assume is the benefit of interest to the hon. Member, a breakdown of disallowances in England, Scotland and Wales is shown in the tables. Adjudication work for Fife is centralised in the Edinburgh (East) adjudication office. The boundaries of the area dealt with by this office are not conterminous with those of the Fife central constituency and it is not possible, therefore, to provide separate figures for this constituency.
