HC Deb 21 January 1988 vol 125 cc768-9W
Mr. Galloway

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, pursuant to his reply to the right hon. and learned Member for Aberavon (Mr. Morris) on 21 October 1987,Official Report, column 814, what was the basis for Her Majesty's Government's estimate, that about 90,000 full-time job equivalents may be involved in the export of goods and services to South Africa.

Mr. Alan Clark

The figure of about 90,000 job equivalents involved in exports of goods and services to South Africa was a broad estimate based on the aggregate level of trade with that country, together with an assumption about the relationship between output and employment.

Mr. Galloway

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will publish the figures for exports from Scotland to the Republic of South Africa and for imports to Scotland from the Republic of South Africa, expressed as a percentage of total Scottish exports and imports in the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Alan Clark
