To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the current situation in respect of Hampstead Heath; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

The London residuary body issued, on 11 January, a further consultation paper inviting views on whether the London borough of Camden, the corporation of the City of London, or a local trust should become responsible for the ownership and management of the heath. Comments are sought by 19 February. The LRB expects to make its recommendations to the Secretary of State thereafter with a view to a formal transfer of the heath as from 1 April 1989.
