To ask the Attorney-General if he will list all the legal actions initiated by his Department in connection with the publication of Mr. Peter Wright's book "Spycatcher" and the cost in each case.

The list of the proceedings, with the approximate amount of costs expended to date in legal fees and travelling and subsistence where relevant, is as follows:

CIVIL PROCEEDINGS FOR BREACH OF CONFIDENTIALITY

AUSTRALIA: Attorney-General v. Heinemann (Australia) and Wright Legal fees: £460,000. Travelling and subsistence: £65,000.

NEW ZEALAND: Attorney-General v. Wellington Newspapers and Others Legal fees: £68,000. Travelling and subsistence: £13,000.

ENGLAND AND WALES: Attorney-General v. Guardian, Observer and Sunday Times Legal fees: £41,500.

HONG KONG: Attorney-General v. South China Morning Post Legal fees: £1,200.

PROCEEDINGS FOR CRIMINAL CONTEMPT OF COURT Attorney-General v. Independent Legal fees: £8,100. Attorney-General v. Sunday Times (including for injunction to restrain threatened contempt) Legal fees: £750. Attorney-General v. Sunday Telegraph; News on Sunday; London Daily News; Evening Standard Legal fees: £250.
