To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many applicants awaiting a decision on their application for political asylum were released into the community during 1987; and if he will list the country of origin of those released;
(2) how many applicants awaiting a decision on their application for political asylum have been released to sponsors or others living in Hayes and Harlington during 1987; and if he will list their countries of origin.

Information is not readily available in the form requested. However, during 1987 some 1,615 persons applied for asylum on arrival at Heathrow, Dover and Gatwick. Their principal countries of origin were:

During 1987, 449 asylum applications were detained for periods of more than 14 days. On 31 December 1987, 59 remained in detention. Information relating to the whereabouts of those granted temporary admission is not kept centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
