Mr. ShersbyTo ask the Prime Minister if she will make a statement on co-ordination between the relevant Departments responsible for taxation and family policy, with particular reference to eligibility for mortgage interest tax relief as it applies to married couples, unmarried couples cohabiting and groups of individuals buying the same house together.
§ The Prime MinisterAll Government Departments take account of the effects of legislation on the family and there is proper co-ordination of their work on policy changes. Mortgage interest tax relief is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer; the aspect to which my hon. Friend refers was discussed in the Chancellor's Green Paper "The Reform of Personal Taxation" published in March 1986 (Cmnd. 9756).
