Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the actual expenditure on the trunk road network in each year since 1978–79; what is the projected outturn expenditure for the current financial year; and what is the budgeted expenditure for 1988–89.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The information requested is as follows:

Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current position of the Dumfries bypass in relation to projected expenditure and planned date of start of construction, and what were the original budget and original planned start date.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The Dumfries bypass has been under construction for many years. Throughout that period estimates of costs and planned start dates have varied as the results of detailed studies became known. The current cost is estimated at £15.10 million and it is planned to start construction in the late summer of this year.

Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current state of planning for the A74 upgrading announced during the general election campaign; what is the budgeted cost; and what alterations in priorities in the trunk road network will be necessary to accommodate it.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

As recently announced, feasibility studies are under way to consider the best way of implementing the upgrading. Until these studies have been completed, around the end of this year, it will not be possible to assess priorities in the trunk road programme, and how the A74 project will fit in. The estimated cost of the project is at least £200 million.

Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in theOfficial Report all correspondence between Ministers and the hon. Member for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley on the Auchinlech/Cuinnock, New Cumnock, Maybole and Girvan bypasses.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Since 1980 Scottish Office Ministers have corresponded with the hon. Member about the four bypasses mentioned on 13 occasions and I have arranged for copies of these letters to be placed in the Library of the House.
