HC Deb 14 January 1988 vol 125 c347W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what are the estimated volumes of radioactive waste likely to be produced by a commercial fusion reactor in terms of cubic metres per gigawatt (e) year.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I am advised by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority that a commercial fusion power reactor of the type now envisaged might produce 10–100 cu m of radioactive waste per gigawatt (e) year. This volume is similar to that produced by a fission reactor of similar volume, but its radioactivity reduces more quickly with time.
