HC Deb 14 January 1988 vol 125 c354W
106. Dr. Reid

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will provide the latest figures for property repossessions arising from mortgage default in 1987.

Mrs. Roe

The Building Societies Association has estimated that 21,950 properties in the United Kingdom were taken into possession by building societies in the year ending June 1987, 0.3 per cent. of the number of loans which were outstanding to the societies at the end of that period. It is estimated that 630 dwellings were taken into possession by English local authorities during the financial year 1985–86, the latest period for which an estimate is available. Corresponding information is not available from other lending institutions.
