To ask the Attorney-General what changes in staffing there have been since 1983 in the county courts of(a) Bristol, (b) Exeter, (c) Yeovil and (d) Taunton.

The Attorney-General

Since 1983 the number of staff at the county courts at Bristol, Yeovil and Taunton have increased from 81 to 82, 19 to 20½ and 13½ to 14 respectively. The number of staff at Exeter remains unchanged. It is intended by the end of January 1988 to increase the staffing levels at Bristol, Exeter and Yeovil by two additional members of staff and at Taunton by one additional member of staff.

To ask the Attorney-General what representations he has received regarding the backlog of cases before the county courts of(a) Bristol, (b) Exeter, (c) Yeovil and (d) Taunton.

The Attorney-General

During the last six months the Lord Chancellor's Department has received 16 representations concerning delays in listing cases at Bristol county court and one concerning delays in listing at Exeter county court. None was received in relation to Yeovil or Taunton.
