To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will indicate the number of British Petroleum shares that have been purchased by the Bank of England under the special arrangements to date; and if he will make a statement.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on his policy towards future sales of shares in British Petroleum plc in the light of the outcome of the recent sale of shares in the company.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont
The shares in British Petroleum which were purchased by the Bank of England under the buyback scheme will be disposed of I n due course as part of the wider privatisation programme. The Bank has undertaken not to dispose of any shares acquired under these arrangements up to 29 April 1988 except at a price in excess of 120p.
