To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of staff employed in his Department are engaged in work related to (a) energy efficiency, (b) renewable sources of energy, (c) nuclear fusion, (d) the fast breeder reactor and (e) other nuclear issues.

Mr. Parkinson

Staff directly employed on energy efficiency are some 6 per cent. of total staff, those on renewables are between 1 and 2 per cent., and those on nuclear some 5 per cent. The figure for nuclear represents staff in atomic energy division. It would be misleading to break down this percentage into time spent on individual projects, since this varies significantly over time.
