Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will detail by(a) grade and (b) location all listed properties on land held by his Department.

Mr. Freeman

I will write to the hon. Gentleman and place a copy of my letter in the Library of the House.

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give the latest estimate of the acreage of all land belonging to, or used by, his Department.

Mr. Freeman

The figures for Ministry of Defence land holdings in the United Kingdom at 1 October 1987 are as shown:

acres
Freehold 553,055
Leasehold 39,482
Rights only 93,086

The Ministry of Defence owns virtually no land overseas but some 309,000 acres are either made available to the Department by host Governments or leased; the Department additionally has rights of access over 197,600 acres.
