To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the average teacher-to-pupil ratio in(a) nursery schools and classes and (b) primary schools in (i) England, (ii) Wales, (iii) Northern Ireland and (iv) by each local authority.

[holding answer 14 December 1987]: The average pupil-teacher ratio in nursery schools and classes and in primary schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in January 1987 was as follows:

Information for each local education authority in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is as follows.

In England, some nursery classes are staffed solely by nursery assistants. As such assistants are not taken into account when calculating pupil-teacher ratios (PTRs), the ratios for some authorities will be relatively high.
