HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 c73W
Mr. Butler

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much he now estimates that public expenditure has risen in real terms since 1978–79, including his latest plans for 1988–89.

Mr. Major

On the basis of the plans for 1988–89 published in the Autumn Statement, the real increase in general Government expenditure, excluding privatisation proceeds, between 1978–79 and 1988–89 is expected to be 18.6 per cent., representing an average annual increase of 1.7 per cent.
