HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc66-7W
Mr. McFall

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the latest estimate of the eventual total cost of the expansion work at Faslane and Coulport;

(2) what proportion of the cost of expansion work at the Clyde submarine base is allocated to the Trident budget;

(3) what has been the total cost of construction work at Faslane and Coulport from 1962 to 1987; and what is the estimated cost from 1987 to 1995.

Mr. Freeman

The total cost, excluding contingencies and PSA resource costs, of the development at the Clyde submarine base, which includes Faslane and Coulport, is estimated at some £660 million; of this, some £350 million is attributable to the Trident programme. About £580 million is expected to be spent between 1 April 1987 and 31 March 1995. I regret that it would involve disproportionate effort to identify expenditure back to 1962.

Mr. McFall

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will estimate the number of civilian jobs at the bases at Faslane and Coulport currently held by individuals residing in Dumbarton district.

Mr. Sainsbury

Approximately 3,100.
