§ Mr. Barry Jones
To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the amount of regional development grants and regional selective grants made in Alyn and Deeside for each year since 1980.

§ Mr. Peter Walker
Expenditure on regional development grants and regional selective assistance in the Alyn and Deeside parliamentary constituency for the financial years 1980–81 to 1986–87 was as follows:

¹ Regional development grant expenditure represents payments under the original scheme (RDG I) and since 1985–86, the revised scheme (RDG II). Records of RDG I expenditure at a sub-Wales level are kept on the basis only of individual payments exceeding £25,000 and by employment office areas. RDG I expenditure has been apportioned to the Alyn and Deeside parliamentary constituency are on the most accurate basis consistent with these records.

² Regional selective assistance expenditure represents payments of industry and training grants. Expenditure on exchange risk losses on European loans and payments under the business improvement services scheme cannot be broken down to a sub-Wales level and is therefore excluded.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the amount of rate support grant paid to Alyn and Deeside council and Clwyd county council in the financial years 1979 to 1987 in(a) cash terms and (b) real terms in 1987–88 prices; and if he will make a statement.

§ Mr. Peter Walker
The amounts of rate support grant expressed in cash terms and in real terms at 1987–88 prices are given in the table. The basis for paying rate support grant was changed in 1981–82 and so figures for individual local authorities before that year are not comparable with those for 1981–82 onwards.
