HC Deb 29 February 1988 vol 128 cc425-6W
Mr. Stott

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Bulgarian authorities about the denial of human rights to the ethnic Turks in Bulgaria; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

We share the hon. Member's concern about reports of human rights abuses in Bulgaria. We have discussed the position of the ethnic Turks with the Bulgarian authorities on several occasions and will continue to do so until it is clear that there is no longer any problem. My right hon. and learned Friend raised the matter with the Bulgarian Foreign Minister during his visit to this country in September 1987. The United Kingdom and others have also raised the question at CSCE meetings and in other international forums, including the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
