HC Deb 29 February 1988 vol 128 cc393-4W
Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion of Britain's bilateral and multilateral overseas aid is currently committed on condition that recipient nations adhere to International Monetary Fund adjustment programmes.

Mr. Chris Patten

The proportion of loans or credits in support of structural adjustment programmes provided by the international development institutions to which we contribute, such as the World Bank, is determined by the board of governors. Typically, the proportion is about 20 per cent.

Programme aid expenditure in the current financial year in support of adjustment programmes agreed with the International Monetary Fund/World Bank, as a proportion of bilateral country aid expenditure, is expected to be 20 per cent.
