Mr. Blair

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services for how long supplementary benefit single payments were made in the United Kingdom; what was the cost thereof for 1983–84, 1984–85, 1985–86 and 1986–87; and what are the latest figures for 1987–88.

Regulated single payments have been made since November 1980. The information requested on expenditure is given below:

As my hon. Friend will be aware, the Government are undertaking a wide-ranging, internal review of the National Health Service. At this stage we are not ruling out any proposals for reform.
