HC Deb 26 February 1988 vol 128 c359W
Mrs. Maureen Hicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services which pupils will be entitled to free school milk and free school lunches following the social securiy changes which come into force in April.

Mr. Portillo

Pupils in families who receive income support will he entitled to free school meals on the same basis as those in families who currently receive supplementary benefit. Milk may be provided as part of the meal. In the new family credit scheme, the child credits include an extra £2.55 a week, in each week of the year, in place of free school meals. It is estimated that around 100,000 more school-age children will benefit under the family credit scheme compared to those who currently receive free school meals under the family income supplement and local authorities' discretionary schemes combined.
