HC Deb 22 February 1988 vol 128 c45W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the number of people who suffer significant long-term adverse reactions after taking pharmaceutical drugs; and approximately what percentage this is of those taking drugs each year.

Mr. Newton

[holding answer 12 January 1988]: Although it is not possible to provide reliable estimates of the number who suffer significant long term adverse reactions after taking pharmaceutical drugs or of the percentage that the latter represents of all who take such drugs in a year, it is clear that the percentage must be extremely small. The number of suspected adverse reaction reports received by the Committee on Safety of Medicines
