To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the circumstances of the resignation of Professor Sigbert Prais from the mathematics working group for the new national curriculum.

In his letter of resignation to my right hon. Friend Professor Prais explained that the calls that the mathematics working group had made on his time were affecting his other commitments. My right hon. Friend regrets that the working group will no longer have the benefit of Professor Prais' advice. However, he has asked the group to take into account in the further work the issues raised by Professor Prais in the note which Professor Prais submitted last November.
