HC Deb 18 February 1988 vol 127 c741W
Mr. Murphy

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many drums of soil contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyl from the Channel tunnel workings in Kent have been stored by his Department at the Royal Army Ordnance Corps depot at Moreton-on-Lugg; where these drums will be removed for incineration; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

A total of 2,990 drums of soil contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls are currently stored at the RAOC depot, Moreton-on-Lugg, Herefordshire. The material is being analysed to determine whether any of it is suitable for landfill at a licensed waste disposal site. Soil which is contaminated above the maximum level which is acceptable for landfill will be destroyed by high temperature incineration. The destruction contract, which has been let to Rechem International Ltd. of Pontypool, requires the incineration programme to be completed by 15 January 1989.
