HC Deb 16 February 1988 vol 127 cc575-6W
24. Mr. Jack Thompson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied with the progress of the implementation of the GCSE.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend is satisfied that teachers and others in the education service will secure the successful implementation of the GCSE. It will take time to reap the full benefits of the new examinations. Careful monitoring is taking place by HMI and reports of significant improvements in teaching and learning have been given.

28. Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent representations he has received about the GCSE.

54. Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received on the content of the new GCSE since September 1987; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend has received a range of representations from parents, teachers and others about the GCSE. Many have welcomed the new examination and the content of courses associated with it. My right hon. Friend is concerned to ensure that any concerns expressed in representations about the content of GCSE syllabuses are brought to the attention of the GCSE examining groups and the Secondary Examinations Council, which are responsible for keeping the GCSE national criteria and syllabuses under review.
