To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he intends to set up the subject working group on English; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend intends to establish the national curriculum working group on English after Easter, following and building on the report, due next month, of the committee chaired by Sir John Kingman on the knowledge needed by teachers and pupils about the workings of the English language.
