HC Deb 15 February 1988 vol 127 cc489-90W
Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how much of the £225 million extra expenditure planned for the income support scheme is attributable to compensation for the payment of 20 per cent. of rates.

Mr. Scott

Including transitional protection, the planned level of expenditure on income support in 1988–89 is some £420 million higher than it would have been if the supplementary benefit scheme had continued with a normal uprating. This includes expenditure of £280 million to compensate for the 20 per cent. rates contribution.
