Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give for each year since 1980 the number of civil servants employed by his Department, excluding those employed on construction, in(a) Greater London, (b) England excluding Greater London, (c) Wales, (d) Scotland and (e) Northern Ireland.

Mr. Sainsbury

It is not possible to distinguish Ministry of Defence employees employed on construction, but the number of full-time equivalent civilian staff, excluding casual staff, employed on January for each year since 1980 was as follows:

for Tonbridge and Mailing (Mr. Stanley) to the hon. Member for Leyton (Mr. Cohen) on 19 January 1987 at column 452. As for the deployment of United States military resources, it is not our usual practice to comment on details.
