Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total number of staff employed in local offices of his Department in(a) Greenock and Port Glasgow, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Scotland at the latest available date; if any changes are envisaged in the number of those employed in the near future; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Portillo

The most recent available information regarding the numbers of staff in post in local offices relates to 1 February 1988 and is as follows:

Numbers
Greenock ILO 176
Port Glasgow ILO 81
Strathclyde Region 4,582.5
Scotland 8,192

Notes: Figures exclude cleaners.

ILO=Integrated Local Office.

The number of staff employed are expected to reduce by April 1988 to take account of reductions in work loads. As part of the annual recomplementing exercise staffing allocations will then be revised. Final details should be available in March 1988.
