§ Mr. Andrew SmithTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the implications of EEC fiscal harmonisation for the United Kingdom special car tax; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Lilley[holding answer 10 February 1988]: The European Commission's package of proposals as currently 344W drafted make no provision for the continuation of car tax in its current form. The proposals have been submitted by ECOFIN to the Economic Policy Committee for consideration of their implications. They cannot be adopted without the unanimous agreement of the Governments of member states.
