Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish a table setting out for 1987–88 and 1988–89 the estimated number of(a) families and (b) persons in each health board or equivalent, and in Northern Ireland as a whole, showing net average expenditure on health and personal social services per family and per person in each year, and distinguishing between expenditure on the National Health Service and on the personal social services.

Mr. Needham

Estimates of population at board level are not held for 1987–88 or 1988–89; the following figures are based on the estimate for mid-1986 which gave the population of Northern Ireland as 1,566,800. There is no generally accepted definition of the family, so per capita expenditure figures only are given. The total per capita expenditure on health and personal social services is expected to be:

£
1987–88 511
11988–89 530

Per capita spending by boards is expected to be2

Service complaints procedures. To reaffirm this position, action is in hand to issue guidance to all members of staff in the Northern Ireland Office and the Northern Ireland Departments in the near future.
