HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 cc264-5W
Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish a table setting out for 1987–88 and 1988–89 the estimated number of(a) families and (b) persons in each health region or equivalent, and in England as a whole, showing net average expenditure on health and personal social services per family and per person in each year, distinguishing between expenditure on the National Heath Service and on the personal social services.

Mr. Newton

The information is not readily available in the form requested. For England as a whole net expenditure per person and per family of four in 1987–88 and 1988–89 is as follows:

Net expenditure per year
Population (million) Health and personal social services National health service Personal social services
£ £ £
1987–88 47.380 Per head 413 349 64
per head per family of four 1,652 1,396 256
1988–89 47.488 Per head 436 370 66
per head per family of four 1,744 1,480 264

The expenditure figures used in this calculation are taken from table 14.1 in "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1988–89 to 1990–91", vol II (Cm 288-II) and include net current and capital spending. The national health service figure is the balance of health and personal social services expenditure after the deduction of health and personal social services spending and includes an element in respect of centrally financed services.
