HC Deb 08 February 1988 vol 127 cc83-4W
Mr. Churchill

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence up to which date the recent National Radiological Protection Board report studied mortality in relation to Britain's nuclear test veterans; by how many since that date the number of deaths from multiple myeloma among nuclear veterans has increased; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sainsbury

In planning the conduct of the study, before any mortality data had been obtained, NRPB decided that it would attempt to take account of all deaths prior to 1 January 1984. The main results of the study refer to that date, although the authors refer in passing to some notifications received later than the above cut-off date. The Government, in the answer given to my hon. Friend the Member for Salisbury (Mr. Key) on 28 January at column309, have already said they would co-operate in implementing the recommendations by NRPB to continue the study for a further period of 10 years. The further data to which the hon. Member refers will be included in that extension to the study.
