§ Mr. HinchliffeTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what action is being taken to reduce the pollution of the River Calder in west Yorkshire.
§ Mr. MoynihanMost of the River Calder from Huddersfield to its confluence with the River Aire is classified as poor quality (class 3). The Yorkshire water authority is working towards upgrading the river to fair quality (class 2) by the early 1990s. The improvement will largely come about through the completion of major schemes at sewage treatment works in the Huddersfield area on which the authority is planning to spend around £17 million over the next two to three years.
