To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the present ratio of pilots to aircraft in the Royal Air Force.

Including pilots in all roles, approximately 2.3:1.

It is not our practice to disclose such details relating to operational aircraft.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many pilots who took premature voluntary retirement in 1987 or who have requested premature voluntary retirement were trained fast-jet pilots.

Mr. Freeman

The numbers of trained fast-jet pilots who in 1987 took, or requested, premature voluntary retirement were 35 and 33 respectively.
