HC Deb 05 February 1988 vol 126 c782W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people are currently being held in detention under the Immigration Act 1987(a) pending the outcome of an immigration appeal and (b) under detention for other reasons, at (i) Welford road prison, Leicester, and (ii) all other prisons in Britain.

Mr. Renton

There are currently seven people detained at Leicester prison, under the Immigration Act 1971. Of these one is detained pending the outcome of an immigration appeal.

The main prison service establishment used for immigration cases is Latchmere house where, on 4 February, 94 people were detained under the Immigration Act 1971. Similar information for other establishments, and details of those detained pending the outcome of an appeal is not kept centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
