To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what initiatives he proposes to ensure water quality is not harmed in areas of intensive farming.

As well as a wide range of other activities through which my Department aims to reduce farm pollution, I have this week launched a campaign to increase awareness among farmers of the problem of nitrate pollution and how they can help to reduce it.

Mr. McLeish

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions he has held recently with farmers' representatives concerning water quality in areas of intensive farming.

Mr. Gummer

I am in frequent contact with farmers' representatives to discuss a wide range of issues, including the possible effect of intensive farming on water quality.
