§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 2 February 1988]: The table is derived from information collected in the 614W survey of personal incomes. As the notes in "Inland Revenue Statistics" indicate, at the time when the survey was conducted, it is likely that a substantial number of claims for business expansion scheme relief for investments in 1984–85 had yet to he submitted. No alternative source of information on numbers of investors is available centrally. I regret therefore that it is not possible to provide the information requested.
