Running Costs Limit (Hansard, 2 February 1988)

§ Mr. Charles Wardle
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any plan to change the 1987–88 running costs limit for the Government Actuary's Department.

§ Mr. Brooke
Subject to parliamentary approval of the necessary Supplementary Estimate, the departmental running costs limit for the Government Actuary's Department will be increased by £26,000 from £2,021,000 to £2,047,000 to provide for new work on behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry. There is no change in the cash limit, and no claim on the Reserve. This increase will be offset by a reduction in the running costs of the Department of Trade and Industry.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if there will be any changes to the 1987–88 running costs limit for Her Majesty's Treasury.

§ Mr. Brooke
Yes. Subject to parliamentary approval of the necessary Supplementary Estimate, the 1987–88 running costs limit for Her Majesty's Treasury will be decreased by £200,000, from £66,364,000 to £66,164,000. This decrease applies to expenditure by the central computer and telecommunications agency under class XIX, vote 13. It is mainly due to staff shortages, partly offset by higher pay costs; and to savings in equipment maintenance, stemming largely from delays in the formal acceptance of the agency's office automation system.
