§ Mr. BlairTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the amount of regional selective assistance to be paid out in Scotland for each year from 1988–89 to 1990–91.
§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 28 January 1988]: The 1988 public expenditure White Paper contains net provision for my right hon. and learned Friend's industry, energy, trade and employment programme in 1988–89, 1989–90, 1990–91, of £266 million, £260 million and £260 million, respectively. Within these totals present expectation is that regional selective assistance (RSA) and related schemes, including the new investment grant for small businesses, will account for some £60 million, £60 million and £80 million in 1988–89, 1989–90 and 1990–91, respectively. The increase in provision between the years reflects expected additional demand for RSA which is envisaged as a result of the ending of the RDG scheme. In addition, support to firms in Scotland will be provided through the new innovation grants scheme and enhanced business development services.
