To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is being done to assist historic churches to attract tourist visitors.

Mr. Lee

The English tourist board offered assistance totalling some £185,000 from the section 4 scheme to tourism developments relating to historic churches in the 1986–87 financial year. At regional level a number of specific initiatives are planned including the 1988 Festival of Yorkshire Abbeys.
