To ask the Secretary of State for Transport by how much capital spending on trunk roads has increased since 1978–79.

Mr. Channon

Actual capital expenditure in 1978–79 was £327 million. Planned capital expenditure for 1987–88 is £893 million. This represents an increase in real terms of 34 per cent. at 1985–86 prices.
