§ Mr. Andrew BowdenTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what plans he has to expand the assisted places scheme among(a) public schools and (b)state schools;
(2) how many public schools have applied to join the assisted places scheme;
(3) if he will publish the numbers of pupils on the assisted places scheme and their schools for each year since the scheme began;
(4) if he will publish the names of (a) state schools, (b) public schools and (c) other schools participating in the assisted places scheme.
§ Mr. DunnThe assisted places scheme exists to give help with tuition fees at certain independent secondary schools to the parents of able children who might not otherwise attend those schools. A complete list of the participating schools in England and numbers of assisted pupils attending each school from 1985 onwards is given below. To provide a detailed breakdown of places before this date would incur disproportionate cost, and total figures only are given for the years 1981–84. As originally planned the scheme would have reached just over 33,000 places in England and Wales when fully developed. The Government now intend to raise that target to an eventual 35,000.
Independent secondary schools in England were invited in October 1987 to apply to join the scheme or to take up additional places if they were already participants. The responses received are now under consideration. One hundred and twenty six new schools have applied to join the scheme and are being considered against the same criteria as apply to existing participants.
