HC Deb 22 December 1988 vol 144 cc406-7W
Mr. Prescott

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are the total casualties killed and major injuries for accidents on British Railways for the years 1982 and 1987; and what percentage change it represents.

Mr. Channon

A breakdown of accident statistics in the form the hon. Member has requested for British Rail as distinct from railways generally is not immediately available. I am having inquiries made as to what further information could be made available. The figures for railways as a whole from 1983 to 1987 are set out in the appendices to the annual report on railway safety during 1987, of which a copy is in the Library. 1982 is not a good year for comparison because there was a railway strike in that year and as a result rail travel was about 8 per cent. lower than normal.
