HC Deb 22 December 1988 vol 144 c407W
Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how often nuclear waste is transported by train through Kirkstall in west Leeds;

(2) how long trains transporting nuclear waste stop and park in the Kirkstall area of Leeds.

Mr. Portillo

The timing and routing of radioactive consignments are a matter for British Rail. I am informed that irradiated nuclear fuel from power stations would not normally travel via Leeds. All such consignments must comply with the internationally agreed safety requirements.

Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what emergency plans are in existence and able to be brought into effect in the event of a major accident resulting from the transportation of nuclear waste by rail through Kirkstall in west Leeds.

Mr. Portillo

In the event of an emergency the plans provide for British Rail staff to alert the civil emergency services, which are able to call upon any necessary specialised advice and assistance.
