To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total amount of money still owed to the National Health Service in Scotland by patients who used private beds between 1979 and 1988; and how many beds are currently available for private hire.

As at 31 March 1988, a total of £92,706 was due to the National Health Service in Scotland for treatment given to private in-patients, and 113 beds are currently available for private hire.
