To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is the total annual budget which is specifically allocated by his Department for the investigation of effects on the environment of atmospheric pollution;

(2) what is the annual budget allocated by his Department for the study of the greenhouse effect and the potential implications for the United Kingdom of this phenomenon.

For 1988–89, the Department allocated £191,000 for research on global pollution questions, including the greenhouse effect, and £1.442 million for air pollution effects research. For 1989–90, the planned expenditure on climate change research is £590,000.
